每讲内容介绍:
These lectures explore the relevance of Cognitive Linguistics to second/foreign language teaching.

It is generally accepted that language teachers should be engaged in teaching the language, not in teaching about the language. It is also clear that language teaching needs to be grounded in a proper theoretical understanding of the material that is being taught. It therefore behooves teachers, teacher trainers, syllabus designers, materials writers, and language testers to have a good insight into the grammar and structure of the target language, even though the grammar as such need not be explicitly taught in the classroom. These lectures present Cognitive Linguistics as a theory of language that is both descriptively adequate (that is, it is able to describe language as it is actually used) and psychologically plausible (that is, it proposes how languages might be learned, stored, and processed), and which therefore is able to provide a good foundation to the language teaching professions.

The lectures are arranged in three ‘blocks’.

· Lectures 1 and 2 introduce some important themes in Cognitive Linguistics. They outline the Cognitive Linguistic approach to the study of semantics, syntax, morphology, and language acquisition.

· Lectures 3 – 7 are structured around five major themes in Cognitive Linguistics, and are illustrated on examples from English.

· Lectures 8 – 10 focus on three specific areas of English Grammar – nouns, verbs, and clauses – with special reference on those aspects which are likely to present learning problems to non-native students. A general theme will be that grammatical distinctions (for example, between count and mass nouns, and between progressive and non-progressive verb forms) have a basis in conceptual distinctions.

It should be stated at the outset that the lectures do not address the methodology of language teaching. The focus, rather, is on topics which are relevant to an understanding of the language that is being taught.

Lecture 1. Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics, and what it might offer the language teaching profession

The first lecture reviews some of the important themes in Cognitive Linguistics, and contrasts Cognitive Linguistics with some other theoretical approaches to language study. It also addresses the question of the role of linguistic theory in language pedagogy, and why Cognitive Linguistics should be particularly attractive to the language teaching profession.

Lecture 2. Language acquisition from a Cognitive Linguistics perspective

As a comprehensive theory of language, Cognitive Linguistics offers some hypotheses concerning how languages are acquired. This lecture reviews the Cognitive Linguistic approach to second/foreign language acquisition, as well as to first language acquisition by infants.

Lecture 3. Topics in Cognitive Linguistics (1). Categorization. Prototypes and the basic level, polysemy and radial categories, and their relevance to the study of word meaning

An important topic in Cognitive Linguistics has been the study of categorization – how speakers categorize, and name, the objects and events in the world around them, and in the inner world of their thoughts and feelings. The study of categorization has important implications for the study of word meaning.

Lecture 4. Topics in Cognitive Linguistics (2). The encyclopedic scope of linguistic semantics. Frames, scripts, and Idealised Cognitive Models

A major assumption of Cognitive Linguistics is that it is not possible to make a principled distinction between knowledge of a language and broader, encyclopedic knowledge of the world, as described in term of frames, scripts, and Idealised Cog
